Supreme Court allows ‘living will’

In a landmark judgement delivered today, the Supreme Court of India has allowed an individual to draft a living will specifying that they not be put on life support if they slip into an incurable coma.

The order was passed by a five judge Constitutional bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and Justices AK Sikri, AM Khanwilkar, DY Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan, which said “Human beings have the right to die with dignity.”

General Guidelines for Nurses to Assess the Suicidal Tendency among Patients

Although inpatient suicides are not as common as the other types of suicides, but it is viewed as the most avoidable and preventable because they occur in close proximity to caretakers/staff. Due to the lack of the research on these issues there is no accurate data available on suicide in hospital settings. Excruciating, feeling of meaninglessness of life, lack of social and mental support, financial burden of the treatment, and feeling of being a burden on family are some of the issues which can drive persons towards suicide commitment or suicidal ideation.

It is possible to reduce suicide risk in the hospital by having a safe environment, optimizing patient visibility, supervising patients appropriately, careful assessment, awareness of and repect for suicide risk, good teamwork and communication, and adequate clinical treatment.

Nurses are the primary caretakers of the inpatients, having one to one relationship with the patients. So being a close attendent, they can play a vital role in assessing the suicidal tendency in a patient, timely. So following are some guidelines for the nurses to assess the suicidal tendency in patients.
